Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise when she was an infant. Her aunt was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents, but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled protests for civil rights that took place across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was in her university. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the residence and scrutinizing the waste belonging to one of the juries. Due to her work, she became dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the business of publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
